Robert Silva attended the CEDIA EXPO this past week and reported on a new 3D DLP demonstration that may be the next wave of home theater entertainment. The 3D video projection was showcased at the Texas Instruments and Mitsubishi booths. The technology utilizes DLP video projection already available but puts a new twist on it to allow a practical and affordable way to view 3D in a home theater room. (For more information on what DLP is and how it works, visit Texas Instruments DLP page.)
The new system works by changing the way the mirrors on the DLP chip react to incoming information. In combination with 3D-mastered material, lightweight, comfortable, polarized eyeglasses, and a PC, the effect created is, according to Silva, amazing. Mitsubishi and Texas Instruments were able to show audiences cips from the Original Star Wars and Revenge of the Sith, Chicken Little, a recent NASCAR race, and an NFL football game – all recreated for 3D viewing.
Some DLP televisions on the market already have 3D viewing capability which makes this new technology that much more tangible and interesting.
