Sony announced last week that they will no longer be in the rear-projection television market. The company has decided to dedicate more resources toward LCD television research and manufacturing. A spokesman for Sony stated that the decision was based on consumer demand for LCD televisions rather than RPTV.
Sony has done very well in the RPTV market compared to most competitors. However, consumer demand for the product has declined over the past two years. The desire for bigger, sleeker LCD flat panel televisions has pushed out other technologies for now.
Toshiba and Hitachi have also dropped their rear-projection lines of products.
