Sony Announced Recycle Program for Analog Televisions

recycle_tv.jpgEnvironmental concerns have popped up ever since it was announced that the analog television transmissions will cease as of February 17, 2009.  One has to wonder where all of the millions of old and new analog television sets will end up.  As more and more people hear that they will need to either purchase digital converter boxes for their existing television or upgrade to a digital-ready TV, many will choose to simply chuck their existing TV for a newer model.  But where does that TV go?

Not wanting to see our dumps and streets littered with electronic equipment, Sony has been the first consumer electronics manufacturer to offer up a solution for this potential environmental nightmare.
Sony has announced that it will setup recycling centers around the U.S. where Sony analog televisions can be disposed of.

Sony’s recycling program will launch on September 15, 2007 with 75 “Waste Management Recycle America” drop-off centers across the United States. Sony states that customers who return their TV to one of their drop-off centers can be assured that the products will be “recycled in an environmentally responsible manner.” More centers may become available as February 2009 approaches.

So what do you do if you have a non-Sony brand television?  Well, let’s hope other consumer electronics manufacturing companies step up to the plate. Until then, Sony will recycle other brands at their facility, for a fee.
