Home Theater Furniture Basics

The growth and sophistication of home theater equipment over the years has created a need for better home theater system furniture as well.   A home theater is not simply a TV on a wooden table or cabinet anymore.  If your home has a well-thought out system, you will want to have furniture that will be able to handle and protect that system and still fit in with the vision you have for the room.

When choosing furniture for your home theater, you will need to consider several factors.  Do you want to display your equipment or hide them from view?   Do you want the system easy to move and change around or do you want it completely stationary?

Here are a few things to think about when you are buying your home theater furniture that will help you make a decision you will be happy with.

Durability:  You want to make sure that whatever stand, cabinet or other piece you are purchasing has the strength and durability for your system.   Some theater equipment, like TVs and amplifiers can be heavy and will need a more reinforced case than others.

Ventilation:  Systems with many constantly running pieces must be kept cool if they are to perform properly. Don’t get anything that doesn’t allow a good amount of air movement.

Versatility:  Electronics change rather rapidly and new products or additional pieces come on the market all the time.   Make sure that your furniture can expand if you need it to and has shelving and components that can be added or moved. This will help you from having to purchase new furniture every time you want something new.

Usability:  We all hate having to pull out furniture in order to fix loose wires.  Make sure you purchase a piece of furniture that is easy to use and wires are easy to access.  Some home theater furniture comes with pull out shelves that make dealing with wires easier. Entire components on wheels also make having to get behind the equipment to add new pieces a snap.

Remember these components when you are putting together your home theater.  Choose something that goes with your vision for the room but don’t forget the practical components that will make this your favorite room in the house.
