OEL Television Displays Not Too Far Away
Toshiba, Panasonic, Sharp and Sony are being brought together by the Japanese government for a project. It is reported in the Nikkei News that the companies will work together on mass-producing organic electroluminescent (OEL) technology displays. The technology is similiar to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) but rather than using diodes, it uses semiconductors. The goal, as reported, is for the group to produce 40″ displays and larger using the technology within the next 10 years. OELs are said to be able to be built thin enough to be mounted on a wall like a poster.
Where is the future of televisions going? It is amazing to think what we may see in our lifetime when it comes to home entertainment systems. The flat panel displays we are clamoring for now may be relics in a matter of 10 years if we may soon have brighter, more efficient displays that can be simply “pinned” to the wall with special mounting screws. Think of the dorm rooms of the future? That clunky 14 inch TV I cherished in college will be archaic compared to a poster size screen above your desk.
