The FCC designated the city as a test market for the transition a few months back and this week, they said “Go.” The rest of the U.S. will make the digital TV transition on February 17, 2009.

A new eCycling program has been adopted by state legislators which effectively puts a requirement on all TV and electronics manufacturers selling in Oregon to pay to have their products recycled when needed. This means that Oregonians will be able to drop off old CRT and LCD TVs as well as other electronics off at recycling sites at no charge. Additionally, the program ensures that the computer and TV recyclers follow environmental guidelines for their disposal.

Mark Fleischmann at Home Theater Magazine got to check out Toshiba’s next generation DVD player last week and provides a good review of its features, both good and bad. Toshiba announced their new XDE-E500 DVD player which will begin shipping this month.

LCD flat panel TVs were the most popular shipped TV, making up 52% of the second quarter shipments. Though LCD TVs have a slight lead, plasma sets continue to gain in shipments, up 34% from last year.

German home audio magazine Stereoplay reviewed the Dali Motif LCR in their June edition and gave it highly positive reviews. The Motif LCR (left|center|right) speaker is a compact high perforamnce surround speaker that can be used in any sleak speaker system. The speaker has a 5″ mid/woofer with an aluminimum chassis and powerful magent system. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally and the cabinet is made of solid medium density fiberboard for reduced resonance.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sharp and Sony are being brought together by the Japanese government for a project. It is reported in the Nikkei News that the companies will work together on mass-producing organic electroluminescent (OEL) technology displays. The technology is similiar to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) but rather than using diodes, it uses semiconductors. The goal, as reported, is for the group to produce 40″ displays and larger using the technology within the next 10 years. OELs are said to be able to be built thin enough to be mounted on a wall like a poster.

The article sites a survey by Parks Associates which found that one-third of consumers listen to music on their home theater video display - CRT, LCD or Plasma.

At the Hokkaido Toyako Summit in Japan this week, Sharp showcased a 26 inch prototype of the first solar powered LCD TV. The TV is said to use 25% of the power of a similar sized CRT and uses two-thirds the amount of power consumption of a regular LCD each year. There is currently no word on when the TV will be available in the U.S.

This FED, currently a prototype, is a 19 inch screen with 1080 by 1920 resolution that throws electrons at the surface of a vacuum tube, but unlike a CRT, it uses a multi-part emitter rather than a single electron gun. It is hoped that 30 and 60 inch models will be available for consumers in the future.

Robert Heron of PC Magazine is quite impressed with LG’s new 47LG60. This 47 inch LCD flat panel television was highlighted in the magazine’s recent August edition as one of the best LCD TVs they’ve ever seen. The TV boasts full 1080p screen resolution, easy access menu and picture controls, and a 1188:1 constract ratio. The reviewer was also pretty jazzed about the HD video processing capabilities. This is one of the most expensive 47″ LCDs on the market (List price of $3,499.99) but for some it may be a great investment.

Once you have laid out the theater room and seen what space you have available, you can determine what home theater seating options are appropriate. Given the space remaining, how many chairs or couches are realistic? Make sure to take into account whether you will want side tables or a coffee table in the room. True theater style chairs give you the most seating for the space but they may not be the most comfortable. More comfortable chairs tend to be wider and plusher which takes up more floor space. If you have kids, you may want to consider seats with cup holders in them to both save space and protect against spills. Otherwise, coffee tables will definitely be needed.

There’s a great review by Mark Fleischmann in Home Theater Magazine about Mitsubishi’s recent press demo in New York and the products they showcased there. The company highlighted laser backlight LCD HDTVs, dubbed LaserVue that used three lasers for the flourescent backlighting in the LCD.

Reports that Panasonic is planning to make organic LED television displays has triggered the start of an official race in the consumer electronics industry toward better, more efficient sets. In a Japanese report, Panasonic says it will produce 37” sets that will be available in the next three years. The announcement comes as LCD sales have drastically eclipsed those of the plasmas Panasonic has been making to date. This announcement may be a hint at Panasonic’s next plan toward surpassing the competition in the television space.

The TV consumes 86kWH per year and uses the standard flourescent backlight rather than the new LED backlight options available in some of their other Bravia televisions. The TVs resolution is 768p, not the more widely prefered 1080p resolution for high-definition televisions.

His receiver combined the power amplifier, preamp and radio tuner into one entity, the first of its kind (learn more about the power of the modern receiver by reading “A/V Receivers: What Makes Them the Command Station of the Home Theater System“) . Now at the age of 89, he has decided to retire from his company, Harman International.

Disney’s new movie Wall-E has opened up a door for them to launch its first line of robotic toys in an attempt to merge toys and consumer electronics into a cohesive children’s toy. Disney Consumer Products has in its 2008-2009 product plans, efforts to launch children’s musical instruments in addition to new versions of their small LCD TVs, MP3 players, portable media players, digital cameras and DVD players, all aimed at the 3-12 year old age group.

These new flat panel screens range in size from 40 inches to 70 inches. Sony has highlighted the line and has specifically focused on its LED-backlit TV Triluminos. Against a leading plasma screen, the LED backlit TV performs great, with a much more true black level. These new TVs come in the grandeous sizes of 55 and 46 inches.
