Disney Combining Toys and Consumer Electronics

Disney’s new movie Wall-E has opened up a door for them to launch its first line of robotic toys in an attempt to merge toys and consumer electronics into a cohesive children’s toy.  Disney Consumer Products has in its 2008-2009 product plans, efforts to launch children’s musical instruments in addition to new versions of their small LCD TVs, MP3 players, portable media players, digital cameras and DVD players, all aimed at the 3-12 year old age group.

These products are all part of Disney’s Toymorrow Initiative aimed at combining toys, space and technology in an effort to grab the market share of younger children who are getting wrapped into the glamour of consumer electronic toys at earlier and earlier ages.

It’s amazing but I can see the appeal to marketers to grab the younger age group with flashier, more technologically advanced toys. I went on a weekend trip with some friends and their two kids (ages 4 and 7) about a month ago.  What did they want to play with in the car on the way to our camping destination?  Mom and Dad’s iPods.
