Choosing the Best Room in the House for your Home Theater System
If you have a custom home theater system or are planning to have one, you also probably have a vision in your mind for what that optimum room will look like. Choosing a room in your current or future home that will serve as your home theater entertainment center can be difficult but it is an important decision.
When first setting out establish your home viewing area, consider which room is best for the set-up you have in mind. Those that have many rooms to choose from should pick a room that can accommodate the equipment you are looking for and that can give you enough room for the necessary seating. Most, however, have only 1 or 2 rooms to choose from. In this case, evaluate the room and determine what type of equipment can best be used in that space. For instance, you may have your heart set on having a rear projection system; however, the square footage of the room may not make that an ideal piece of equipment. In either case, have the approximately dimensions of the room handy when you go to view home theater equipment. This will help the sales staff make better recommendations.
Not all decisions are related to the size of the room. Whether you have a 300 square foot room or 500, there are things you should consider about the room that may also affect your decision. First, take note of the lighting in the room. Do you have a large number of windows in a room that may create a lot of glare on the plasma or LCD video display during certain parts of the day? Do you have existing lighting that can be dimmed or brightened to enhance viewing? Second, is the room carpeted? Stereo sound quality changes depending on whether you have carpet or hardwood floor. Third, how dense are the walls in your home? If the walls surrounding your home theater are thin, this may negatively affect the sound quality. Finally, look around the room and assess whether mounting speakers on the wall is an option. Rooms that are too small may not allow for this option.
Once you have chosen your home theater room and assessed some of the items outlined above, call or visit your home theater installer and relay the information. This will make purchasing the right equipment for you easier.
