Are We Ready for Laser TV?
At CES this week, Mitsubishi announced its latest concept in television technology – the Laser TV. Laser TV uses a new rear projection system technology that utilizes laser beams as light sources. Mitsubishi claims that this creates a more precise color, wider contract ratio and the capabilities necessary to have a very large screen at a price much lower than Plasma or LCD televisions.
Is it too late for another competing television concept? We are watching the slow extinction of rear-projection television (read “Sony Leaves Rear-Projection Television Behind”) and so many consumers are already overwhelmed by the LCD vs. Plasma, Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD conundrums swirling around. Are we ready for something else?
Mitsubishi gave an end of 2008 timeline for the commercial release of Laser TV. We will have to watch to see whether it makes the splash they are hoping for.
