Mark Fleischmann at Home Theater Magazine got to check out Toshiba’s next generation DVD player last week and provides a good review of its features, both good and bad. Toshiba announced their new XDE-E500 DVD player which will begin shipping this month.

A new survey by DisplaySearch shows a 28% increase in TV shipments globally since this same time last year. LCD flat panel TVs were the most popular shipped TV, making up 52% of the second quarter shipments. Though LCD TVs have a slight lead, plasma sets continue to gain in shipments, up 34% from last year.

Go Green and Recycle your old Sony Electronics items at the Portland (OR) Expo Center this Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 9am - 3pm. The event is being hosted by Sony Electronics and Waste Management and is part of the company’s on-going dedication to better recycling of old electronic equipment, including television sets and stereo equipment.

At July’s Rocky Mountain Audio Fest DALI received high praise and award recognition as one of the show’s “Audio Oasis.” The room, set up by DALI featuring the Euphonia MS 4, was selected through online feedback as one of the best home theater audio rooms at the Denver event.

German home audio magazine Stereoplay reviewed the Dali Motif LCR in their June edition and gave it highly positive reviews. The Motif LCR (left|center|right) speaker is a compact high perforamnce surround speaker that can be used in any sleak speaker system. The speaker has a 5″ mid/woofer with an aluminimum chassis and powerful magent system. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally and the cabinet is made of solid medium density fiberboard for reduced resonance.Â

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sharp and Sony are being brought together by the Japanese government for a project. It is reported in the Nikkei News that the companies will work together on mass-producing organic electroluminescent (OEL) technology displays. The technology is similiar to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) but rather than using diodes, it uses semiconductors. The goal, as reported, is for the group to produce 40″ displays and larger using the technology within the next 10 years. OELs are said to be able to be built thin enough to be mounted on a wall like a poster.

There is a great article in the July Home Theater Magazine on home owners that use their television sets to listen to music at home. The article sites a survey by Parks Associates which found that one-third of consumers listen to music on their home theater video display - CRT, LCD or Plasma.
